Bucaré Terrace Expansion
San Juan, PR - 2022
A house with a gorgeous family with three little beautiful girls wanted to expand their terrace. It started as a simple task of the clients wanting to expand about 15'-0" and adding a small pool with an infinity border on their residence. The goal was to keep the design integrated to the existing structure to not make it look like an "add-on". The house sits on a naturally sloped site, which was of benefit to be able to achieve an infinity pool border. Planters were added to the edges as a buffer of the patio and also a stair. Mostly all of the terrace is fully covered, but there is an area with exposed concrete beams to allow natural light to pass through. Black round steel columns were added as structural elements, which allow for a lighter design aesthetic.
After finishing the terrace design, a new challenge came up where they wanted a studio room with separate access from the house. The existing storage room was expanded and partially converted to a full studio equipped with a kitchen, laundry, and ADA compliant bathroom. Although there is a lateral side entrance, the terrace stair works as a connection from the studio to the main house.
