P.E. R6

Dorado, PR - 2022

With a prime location, a minute walk from the beach, and with an incredible flamboyant tree right in front of its entrance, this residence was remodeled for a young professional couple. They lived in it for a couple of years before proceeding to make layout and finish modifications. Their main requirements were - in addition to staying on budget - to work around the existing dining table and leather sofa, open the kitchen layout and relocate the washer/dryer unit.

One of the design goals was to create a sense of a breezy and cozy environment, where the owners would feel their beach context, but also the comfort needed in a home. The floor was changed to a large, rectified slab, creating a sense of amplitude. The kitchen layout was modified, allowing for a continuous flow through the space and adding an island with storage and seating area. Since the owners like to host and cook, this allows for better interaction between them and their guests. A cozy bar area was also created for dialogue and cocktails among guests. The washer/dryer unit was relocated to the second level, an enclosure with glass blocks was used to give continuity to the adjacent existing façade. The stair handrail was changed to white quartz. Large floor and wall tiles were used in the two full bathrooms, upstairs, to create that sense of amplitude once again; one of the bathrooms was changed to a shower and the other remained with a bathtub, which can be functional when they decide to grow their family. For the powder room, custom terrazzo wall tiles were used and a concrete sink was incorporated. Finally, the owners were a key part of the improvements, deciding to replace some existing windows with sliding doors and selecting several elements, such as the furniture in the bar area and their growing art collection.
